Anne Frank House History, Description, & Facts

anne frank house

Nowadays, the rooms at the Anne Frank House, though empty, still breathe the atmosphere of that period of time. Quotations from the diary, historical documents, photographs, film images, and original objects that belonged to those in hiding and the helpers illustrate the events that took place here. Anne's original diary and other notebooks are on display in the museum. In the multimedia space, visitors can go on a "virtual journey" through the Anne Frank House, accessing background information about the people in hiding and World War Two.

Exceptions to the opening hours

Entry timeslots are offered in 15 minute increments with slots between 1000 and 1500 the most popular. Currently, there are a potential 90 tickets available for each timeslot increment. In the peak spring and summer season ticket timeslots sell out quickly. There is generally more availability in the winter off-season – as of early 2024, tickets are available for all dates in the 6 week period.

Our Terms and Conditions for Visitors are part of our efforts. These Terms and Conditions cover access to the museum, the code of conduct for visitors, and our complaints procedure, among other things. The museum has a cloakroom where you can leave your coat, bag, umbrella, or buggy. Only bags that are smaller than an A4 sheet of paper can be carried inside. We do not have room to store large bags and backpacks, suitcases, or other large items. Please leave your luggage at your hotel or deposit it at Amsterdam Central Station, otherwise, you may not be able to visit the museum.

A Useful Guide To Visiting Anne Frank House, Amsterdam

From here, it’s just a (very scenic, especially delicious) 20-minute walk to the Anne Frank House and a 15-minute walk to Museum Square, home to the Van Gogh Museum, the world famous Rijksmuseum, and more. This highly-rated 2-hour walking tour includes a knowledgeable, local guide and takes you through Amsterdam's Jewish Quarter. If your travels are also taking you to Germany, be sure to visit Dachau Concentration Camp outside Munich for a life-changing experience. You can read my complete guide to visiting in that link.

Our terms and conditions for visiting

However, the evening time slot is very popular, be sure to book it right after the museum releases the tickets online. Of all the tips for visiting the Anne Frank House, this is by far the most important. Admission tickets to the Anne Frank House are only sold directly through the Anne Frank House and only online. You can’t buy tickets through any third-party sellers, discount clubs, tourist services, at the museum itself, nothing. The last room of the museum houses the original diary. There are no guided tours on offer at Anne Frank House.

Group visits and school visits

Otto spent much of his time adding to this collection of objects to tell the story of his daughter and the rest of the group that lived together in secret. Containing a stove and dining table, during the day the living room was where the family spent time together and at nighttime this shared space was made into the bedroom for Otto, Edith, and Margot Frank. The Secret Annex is where all eight people lived in secret.

Crucial Tips for Visiting the Anne Frank House: A Need-to-Read Guide

The museum has minimal spots, and the tickets are sold out quickly. Ashley is a World War II historian and travel expert who has visited 33 countries. She specializes in quick trips throughout Europe and the Americas with a focus on World War II museums, memorials, battlefields, and other sites of interest. It offers a 24-hour front desk along with luggage storage, a continental breakfast, free wifi, all in an amazing location.

She learned the language, made new friends and went to a Dutch school near her home. Her father worked hard to get his business off the ground, but it was not easy. Otto also tried to set up a company in England, but the plan fell through. Things looked up when he started selling herbs and spices in addition to the pectin.

Netherlands Museum Pass

It's a must-visit for anyone travelling to Amsterdam and looking to understand the importance of remaining vigilant against the dangers of discrimination and intolerance in today's world. As the capital of the Netherlands and with more than a million people living in its urban area, Amsterdam is packed with historical sites that are well worth a visit. Anne Frank died in Bergen-Belsen in March 1945, but her diary was later discovered by her father and published to worldwide acclaim.

In July 1942 the Frank family went into hiding in concealed rooms (the secret annex) at Prinsengracht 263 – the building where her father Otto Frank ran a business trading in pectin. In early November 1944, Anne was put on transport again. She was deported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp with Margot. There was a lack of food, it was cold, wet and there were contagious diseases. In February 1945 they both died owing to its effects, Margot first, Anne shortly afterwards. The Anne Frank Foundation was established on 3 May 1957 in cooperation with Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father, with the primary aim of collecting enough funds to purchase and restore the building.

Unemployment was high and poverty was severe in Germany, and it was the period in which Adolf Hitler and his party were gaining more and more supporters. Hitler hated the Jews and blamed them for the problems in the country. He took advantage of the rampant antisemitic sentiments in Germany. The hatred of Jews and the poor economic situation made Anne's parents, Otto and Edith Frank, decide to move to Amsterdam.

Around 350 people from Anne's transport were immediately taken to the gas chambers and murdered. Anne, Margot and their mother were sent to the labour camp for women. Before long, Anne felt right at home in the Netherlands.

Subsequently, the building became a warehouse, and the front warehouse with its wide stable-like doors was used to house horses. At the start of the 20th century, a manufacturer of household appliances occupied the building, succeeded in 1930 by a producer of piano rolls, who vacated the property by 1939.

There are always many people; it’s best to avoid lunchtime if you want to have food there. It’s best to visit the museum in the evening since it gets dark around 16.30 in December; you want to fully utilize your time for other attractions when the sun still shines. Furthermore, there is no tour with entrance tickets; you can only buy the tickets on the Anne Frank House website. If you cannot book the tickets while you are in Amsterdam, here is what you can do.

Your ticket is only valid if you attend your reserved time slot. You can see where Anne was hiding during the Nazi occupation in Amsterdam. I highly recommend reading the books before your visit so you feel better about what happened and how Anne thought. If Third Reich history is something you’re interested in, check out my article on visiting the NS-Documentation Center, located at the birthplace of the Nazi Party in Munich, Germany.

A visit to the place where she wrote her diary is an unforgettable experience. Through several topics of debate, 21 voters are led to define the limit between freedom of expression and discrimination. The museum allows visitors to see the moving bookcase, walk through the cramped secret annex and gain a true appreciation of the hardship this group endured in their fight for survival. Although known as Anne Frank’s House, the site was originally her father’s office building and all eight inhabitants lived in a secret annex in the attic hidden by a moveable bookcase. Following a visit to the annex you can explore other parts of the house. The front of the house showcases a variety of different items from the family’s time living in the annex.

Bad cad all around

Design Review enables your entire project or product team to view, print, measure, and markup DWF, DWG, DXF, PDF and raster files containing 2D and 3D content. Most DWF files begin as a drawing or model created in such Autodesk programs as AutoCAD, Inventor, and Revit. Before a DWF file is published, the person publishing the DWF file determines which features (model, layouts, layers, blocks, named views, and so on) are included in the published DWF file. Once the content has been determined, the designer publishes the file from its original format to a DWF file and sends the DWF file to the review team to begin the digital design review process.

About Using Design Review to Review and Markup Files

As and example, I have had an experience where 3DS max would crash constantly with NO indication of why. Their website is also no help, consistently pointing me to empty pages and failing to load pages. Rubbish support, I have a simple but ongoing case, first I try Live Chat where I'm connected to an offshore operator who has no idea about Autodesk Software, he just keeps "apologizing", "thanking me for my patience" and "forwarding article links". After an hour of wasting time, he forwards my case and abruptly ends the chat, however, nothing happens afterward. Yes, this software can be installed on personal computers. By default, Autodesk Design Review 2013 will be installed displaying the Resources tab.

Can I install this software on my personal computers?

Deleting the contents of this Setup subdirectory can only be remedied by re-running the installation using the original distribution media. When the Design Review 2013 installer detects an earlier version of Design Review, the earlier version will be uninstalled automatically before Design Review 2013 is installed. If detected during the install, previous versions of the DGN and JT Import Plug-ins will also be automatically uninstalled. Before you begin, temporarily turn off all active applications, including virus checking software. As for Autodesk Flow, this cloud-based platform is getting improved functions to help studios connect artists across the VFX and animation pipeline. The ShotGrid is being Flow Production Tracking and Moxion is now renamed Flow Capture; not that spectacular, but the renaming ushers in some new features that Flow users will find an improvement over the previous tools.

The markups and their statuses are saved in the DWF file. Autodesk® Design Review is a free program used for creating and reviewing DWF files. An open, published, and secure file format developed by Autodesk, DWF enables you to combine and publish rich 2D- and 3D-design data and share it with others. Disgusting filthy company.I have had on of their products for 13 years, hard copy bought and paid for. Having had a hardware problem on my computer, I had to reinstall it, it installed okay but when I went to open it a further request for proof was required and could be accessed by request.

I requested this but was told mt product is no longer supported so they refused to let me open it.I went to my account and the item was shown in my products. I told them that this is proof of my purchasing the software; and what did they do? Have been trying for over a month to begin a free trial of Revit LT to no avail. Their download process is horrible but the worst issue is that there is NO customer service or tech support.

Unlike PDF files, however, DWF files retain detailed design information and scale, and are therefore more suitable for architects, engineers, and designers. If you're a 3D modeller or animator then Maya's new Smart Extrude tool, Motion Trail Editor, and a redesigned Dope Sheet will catch the eye. In 3ds Max, artists can achieve better results even faster with improvements to tools like Retopology. Autodesk reveals improvements to its best 3D modelling and animation tools. Apparently happen to reopen a case that they failed to fix but then they wont, just a load of automated responses, gotta start the process all over again.

When you open a marked-up DWF or DWFx file in the product, you can view the markups in the drawing area, turn them off, make your changes, change the status of the markups, and republish the DWF or DWFx file to send out for another review. Currently, the Microsoft XPS Viewer does not support sheets containing 3D content, password-protected content, object properties, restricted content, or georeferenced map coordinates. In the Microsoft XPS Viewer, when attempting to view sheets DWFx files containing any of these unsupported features, a warning directs you to download and view the DWFx file in Design Review. I bought a subscription for PM & D Collection for $3000 and never got it to work. Hed to uninstall and reinstall several times and still got stuck in trial mode. No support, put in support ticket got no answer except that it'll take two days for an answer, but actually never got an answer.

European, Asian, Mississippi & Nile Cruises Viking®

viking river cruise ships

For example, once the crew knows that everyone is accounted for after excursions, the ship is sailing within minutes of the anticipated departure (as noted in the Viking Daily). Some guests preferred to stay in the Lounge and simply relax, read a book, or enjoy the view beyond the big plate glass window or take in the views from the sun deck. It’s important to note that when the ship docks somewhere in the morning and you go on an excursion, you sometimes will be brought back to the ship in a different location — like another city further down the river. This taught me to take pictures when I first see a scenic sight just in case I wouldn’t have the opportunity again. As you leave the ship, you’ll scan your room key to indicate your departure and rescan it upon returning.

There are several things you won’t find on a Viking River cruise, and they are often some of the prime reasons so many people choose Viking. See our 360 virtual tours of each suite and stateroom category HERE.

What really makes Viking Longships stand out, however, are the suites onboard. Viking is one of the few river cruise lines that offer a true two-room suite on their river ships. The ships have seven 275-square foot Veranda Suites, which are all located on the upper deck and have a separate sleeping and living area. Sometimes there’s a lot of river cruise ship traffic in popular cities.

Without a doubt, we give Viking chefs top marks for the presentation and flavor of the food they serve. We always enjoyed the variety of food from the local areas we were visiting. After all, we travel to experience new places, new food, and new people, so we like to eat local specialties whenever possible. Whichever side of the menu you order from, the meals for the entire table are served at the same time. For more details on the areas designed for guest comfort, read the illustrated guide to the Viking River Cruise ship’s common areas. Guests are served complimentary soft drinks, beer, or wine during lunch and dinner.

Many of the activities on board Viking's ocean ships revolve around "cultural enrichment," to use a phrase often used by Viking executives. On any given day, you might find an expert on one of the destinations you're visiting lecturing in the theater, or a classical musician performing in the central atrium, known as The Living Room. The ships also offer some traditional entertainment, including production shows with singers and dancers. Having a step-out balcony on a European river ship is not a given. Viking has designed its Longships so there are 39 cabins with full step-out balconies, where you can sit with your coffee in the morning and enjoy watching the river.

Viking Longships

The river cruise line famously won the Guinness Book of World Records' designation for the most ship christenings in one day, back in 2014 when it launched 14 of its signature Longships in a single day. Growth hasn't slowed since then, as the line tries to add multiple new river cruise ships every year, which means passengers are more likely than not to get a spanking new boat. VERANDA SUITES - An upgraded option, the Veranda Suite provides a much larger space than the traditional staterooms. The door opens to a living room with a couch, table, and a comfy chair right next to the step out balcony where you can enjoy your morning coffee while watching the world go by! There is a separate bedroom space that also boasts a French balcony, flat screen tv, and ample storage.

Viking River Cruise Destinations

In all ports, passengers have at least one free sightseeing option, with several extra-fee choices as well. Onboard, there are few activities to engage in but the occasional onboard presentation (usually a lecture, or local dance or music troupe) draws a crowd. Evening music (typically a piano player) may or may not be popular depending on the crowd onboard. But the stars of the ships are the two Explorer Suites, both located on the upper deck at the back of the ship.

Restaurants and dining

There are so many choices of destinations and lengths of the trip. Some people book two cruises back-to-back to extend their vacation. Also, Viking offers options to add a few days in the first or last destination before and after a cruise.

The bathroom is much larger than those in the classic staterooms, with heated floors and a large shower. The Veranda Suite also has its own coffee bar space for a little morning pick-me-up. When booking this suite, you are also eligible for special discounts on premium economy or business class airfare, and have noon embarkation privileges so you can board the ship before the other passengers. At Harr Travel, when we ask our customers what they love most about a Viking River Cruise, the answer is overwhelmingly “value”.

On one side of the menu are the “classics” or options that are always available. When we cruised, the “classics” included Caesar salad as a starter; steak, salmon, and chicken as entrees, and Creme Brûlée, a selection of cheeses, a fruit plate, and ice cream for dessert. SUN DECK - The very top of the ship is where the sundeck is located. Here you will be able to relax with several different seating and lounging options. The Sun Deck also has its own herb garden, where the chef’s pick herbs to cook from daily. The solar panels located on this deck make all the Longships more eco friendly.

We had grown to like the crew on the Skirnir, but we quickly came to like the new ones as well. The staterooms and bathrooms are efficiently designed to maximize usable space, and there are many things to appreciate in the staterooms. STEP OUT BALCONY STATEROOMS - Located across the hall from the French Balcony rooms, these Staterooms are the exact same layout, except with the lovely addition of a step out balcony. Here you can relax on your balcony chairs as you enjoy the views of the magnificent European cities and landscapes. When we were underway, I spent a lot of time there, either writing or reading. Plus, with the Front Porch Cafe buffet attached, it was easy to enjoy alfresco lunch or dinner, weather permitting. While ashore, I enjoyed leisurely strolls along the riverbank whenever I wasn't lazily making my way between points of interest. My first glimpse of the boat in the wild (or, rather, docked in Pittsburgh, on the Ohio River near Acrisure Stadium, where the Steelers play) left me impressed.

Take time to appreciate American artistry at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. Rest up from your portside adventures during five days of scenic river cruising. In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. You'll also visit Paducah, Kentucky, and Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee, where experiences include whiskey and bourbon tasting, tours of landmark art murals and, of course, Civil War history. With the most awards and itinerary options, find your perfect cruise with the leader in USA river cruises.

THEME CRUISES

There are also less river cruises available in the U.S. compared to ocean cruises, so the increased demand drives up the price. Although river cruises in the U.S. can sometimes be more expensive than cruising the rivers of Europe, U.S. residents don't have to worry about paying for visas or international flights. The final cost of an American river cruise depends on factors such as the month you're traveling and the specific cruise line's itinerary details.

The slower, more relaxed pace helped me to maximize my enjoyment because I felt like I was able to be in the moment instead of thinking about where I had to be next. Because I was traveling with my dad on our first father-daughter trip, that was especially important to me. From its lacy gingerbread trim to its shrill-but-wholesome calliope music, the boat evokes an air of southern Gilded Age luxury so strong I fully expected to bump into Mark Twain in one of the onboard lounges. With our Niagara and the Great Lakes trip, for example, you can write about the sheer volume of water cascading over the world-famous Niagara Falls. (For the record, more than 3,000 tons of water cascade over the falls every second!) The roar can be heard for miles, and you’ll have a front-row seat to this magnificent natural wonder. The Columbia and Snake Rivers on the border between Washington and Oregon are also extremely popular.

I would be remiss if I didn't start this section by saying that every crew member I met on the sailing was friendly, helpful and eager to please. They always gave me passing smiles, waves and greetings, no matter how busy they were, and it was obvious they were all working hard. Another surprise came when I stumbled on a series of doors in the same hallway that leads to the Engine Room Bar. On each was a list of cabin numbers, indicating that my cabin — 505, an open-veranda suite — had access to the Grand Saloon's private balcony boxes. Also, keep your eye out for hidden outdoor areas that will allow you to view the paddlewheel up-close.

River cruising is a type of travel that involves navigating a river on a small, often luxurious, ship. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises take passengers on journeys through inland waterways, such as the Danube, Rhine, Nile, Yangtze, Mekong, and many other rivers around the world. River cruises typically offer a more intimate and relaxed experience than ocean cruises, with smaller ships and fewer passengers.

Spotting wildlife and sipping wine go hand-in-hand on this UnCruise Adventures expedition around the Pacific Northwest. The seven-night round-trip journey from Portland isn't your typical leisure cruise. Instead, passengers get to go on rainforest hikes, rafting adventures, winery visits, and scenic kayaking excursions through dramatic canyons. River Cruise Specialists the experience and expertise to provide valuable advice on how to get the best value for your river cruise dollar. They can offer insider deals, promotions, and discounts, as well as provide guidance on how to choose the right cabin category and when to book.

The trips detailed on our website comprise many of the most phenomenal cruises we’ve put together for you. And since they take place right here in the U.S. of A., there’s less travel time involved in getting to the embarkation points, and more time to relax and travel the winding waterways of America. Here are five river cruises that will show you the U.S. in a whole new light. With Cruise Genie, you're not just booking a cruise; you're embarking on a journey that promises adventure, relaxation, and discovery. Our award-winning service, curated by experts with decades of experience, ensures that every aspect of your river cruise exceeds your expectations.

Rooms average over 300 square feet, with our newest ships having rooms well over 600 square feet. That compares favorably to most other riverboats around the world where rooms can be approximately 180 square feet due to physical limitations on rivers in Europe. America’s coasts and rivers are our country’s original roads and form a maritime highway that connects almost every major city in the U.S. They traverse our biggest cities and most historic towns, yet also flow through areas more remote than any road.

Cruise wear for women: what you need to pack for your next cruise

cruise wear for women

I like to wear cute sets, or shorts and a cute top that’s easy to throw on when heading to the breakfast buffet. This is the least formal part of your cruise, but I would avoid walking around in your pajamas. So whether this is your first cruise or if you are a seasoned cruiser, I hope you find some new inspiration for your upcoming cruise with these new cruise outfits. I’ve been on all kinds of itineraries from shorter Caribbean cruises to long Mediterranean cruises, and from my experience, the cruise outfits generally stay the same.

What do you wear on cruises during the day?

This could be a denim jacket, a lightweight sweater, or shall. I wouldn’t worry too much about what to wear on Embarkation day, but having a swimsuit ready to go is a great idea. Even if you’re not a fitness enthusiast, consider bringing workout wear for onboard fitness classes or activities like jogging on the ship’s track.

Long White Dress (embroidered style)

For embarkation day I would plan on wearing a casual outfit with lighter materials with layers- or even your airplane outfit. Something lightweight, yet appropriate to wear wandering around the ship. Always pack at least one swimsuit for your cruise, even if you aren’t on a hot weather cruise. There are several hot tubs on most cruise ships, and occasionally covered pools.

Classy Cocktail Dresses for Every Style Personality

Women appreciate the versatility of caftan dresses as they can be accessorized for an elevated look. A skort—combining the appearance of a skirt with the functionality of shorts—provides flexibility and style. Teamed with a blouse, this outfit offers a sporty yet cute aesthetic perfect for an active day on a cruise. Its lightweight fabric provides comfort, while the stripes offer a nod to nautical themes.

Post navigation

Evenings on a cruise can get cool, especially in the dining room or theater. Bring a light cardigan or shawl that you can easily drape over your shoulders for added comfort. It would work well any evening in the main dining room or specialty restaurant on a cruise. I like to have one in black and ivory, however it’s available in several colors.

Glam Bathing Suit

These accessories shield you from harmful UV rays and add a touch of style to your cruise outfits. Sneakers or sandals with cushioned soles are ideal for long walks or excursions, while flip-flops or water-resistant slides are perfect for poolside relaxation. Remember to pack a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and a hat for added sun protection. Shorts and T-shirts are popular for men and women, providing a relaxed and breezy look.

Recap: What to Wear on a Cruise (Day, Evening and Formal Nights)

This one piece Cupshe brand bathing suit has tummy control and is very flattering on real women’s bodies. It’s also available in a few slightly different styles and colors. Make sure to pack at least 2 bathing suits for your cruise, so when one is wet the other is dry. A short chiffon sarong wrap is a perfect cover up for bikinis or or one piece bathing suits. You’ll want to put on a bathing suit cover up when heading indoors on your cruise or to eat at one of the restaurants. Make sure to pack 2 cover ups, so you can change your look and always have a clean, dry one available.

Embrace a stylish yet comfortable motto, favoring casual cruise wear, especially with Norwegian Cruise Line’s freestyle concept. Adapt to dressier occasions when called for with a couple of added pieces. Cruise wear for women is about achieving the ideal balance of style and comfort for a memorable experience.

An outfit for the buffet can be super laid-back, while the dining rooms tend to be more elevated, with readers opting for dresses and jumpsuits with sandals or flats. Make sure your cruise packing list includes a lightweight bag for your book, sun protection, wallet, camera, phone and a foldable dry bag tucked inside. When you're done swimming, you can stow your swimwear away in the dry bag without getting the rest of your items wet. A swimsuit is fundamental for a beach day, paired with a stylish cover-up for transitioning from water to land.

Beach sandals are ideal for walking on hot sand, and a beach bag is perfect for carrying essentials like sunscreen, towels, and a water bottle. Selecting the right outfits for various cruise excursions is essential for both comfort and style. They ensure participants can fully enjoy their activities while blending practicality with the appropriate dress code for the setting they’ll be exploring. Some ships require dressier outfits like long gowns and fancy cocktail dresses. Others are a little less formal, and a maxi or a little black dress will do. Flip-flops, sandals, or waterproof slides are a must for pool days and beach excursions.

They offer an easy one-and-done outfit solution, catering to both casual and formal settings on a cruise. Now unfortunately for the men, the evening cruise line dress code applies mostly to men. Double-check which cruise line you are cruising with to see the exact evening dress code. But if you still want to wear a formal evening gown, it’s welcome. Consider a sleep mask if you’re sailing on itineraries with extended daylight hours.

Cruising Alaska with Disney Cruise Line: A First-Timer's Guide

disney alaskan cruise

As the most offered Disney Alaska Cruise sailing, the 7-Night Itinerary on the Disney Wonder brings you to Alaska’s Inner Passage, and along the Alaskan Coastline. If you’re looking for Alaska cruise tips, here is everything we did on our Disney Alaska Cruise that may help you in planning yours. It’s fun to wear red-and-black plaid in Ketchikan, especially if you’re planning to see the lumberjack show there, and it’s also fun to bring Disney-themed door decorations—check Pinterest and Etsy for ideas. The only restaurant with an upcharge is Palo, the adults-only Italian eatery atop the ship. The cuisine there is a step up, and the service is top-notch, too.

How Food Works Onboard Disney Cruise to Alaska

On our cruise, they also wore them the day we were in Skagway. In fact, as we sailed away from port, we ran into Mickey out on Deck 4 — with no line — waving goodbye to land with the rest of us. If you're looking for an adult version that will warm you to the bones, keep an eye out for bar carts out on deck during glacier viewing. You get a cool Alaska-themed reusable cup with the price of your drink. For example, by booking directly, we paid much less for the silly but fun Disney-branded lumberjack show right next to the ship in Ketchikan.

Amtrak Cascade Train from Seattle to Vancouver

If you need a book downloaded for your Kindle or podcast downloaded for the gym, do everything you can to download these before leaving for your trip. After our long morning on the boat we got back on the bus and headed to the Mendenhall Glacier. All along the ride we had very fun narration from our bus driver who shared a look into what it is like living in Alaska.

Are Disney Port Adventures Included in Your Disney Cruise Cost?

Be sure to stop off at the Juneau Visitors Center for a port map, and to ask questions. A bonus of taking the Amtrak Cascades Train from Seattle to Vancouver is that the Customs officer simply checks each passport while guests are on the train. About a 4-hour ride from Seattle to Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station, the train offers nice seating, ample overhead baggage storage, a baggage car, and a small cafe offering packaged snacks and coffee. The views from the train are worth the trip and great if you’re looking for a leisurely start to your vacation. After our railway tour we still had a chance to walk around the town. We stopped at a Christmas shop and enjoyed chatting with the owners who turned out to spend winter in San Diego, California.

Sometimes there's live music, cozy fires to warm up by and free talks from staffers to learn about the totem polls, wildlife and other aspects of the park. An easy excursion to do, even if you have just a few hours in Vancouver, is the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Free shuttles leave from multiple downtown spots to the park, including from near the port itself, and it's a fabulous way to spend a few hours on land, or rather, in the trees. Glacier day isn't the only time Mickey and his friends wear these adorable outfits.

Rainforest Sanctuary and Totem Park Disney Excursion $149

Booking direct also lets you take advantage of discounts, such as lower rates for veterans or active military. The show takes place a few steps from the dock, so there's no risk of not returning to the ship on time. With other, shorter excursions, it can make a lot of sense (and save a lot of dollars) to book on your own directly with a tour operator. Don't sail all the way to Alaska and just walk around the shops near the pier in cities like Juneau and Skagway, especially if this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip. The "glacier day" on the ship can be confusing if you haven't done it before and don't know what to expect.

Full collections of Harry Potter and Studio Ghibli merch sit happily next to Italo Calvino, Kafka, and Agatha Christie. The most amazing bookstore to browse if you’re looking for a unique book gift or a special edition of a classic. Accessible by FREE shuttle from Canada Place every 15 minutes, you can grab a short ride over to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Featuring a Forest Walk that takes you over a series of suspension bridges, a deck walk that sits high above the small creek below, plus Kid’s Activities, and trails throughout, this one is not for the faint of heart.

Choosing Your Disney Cruise Line Alaskan Excursions

I made a quick stop for a last minute electronics need at an Apple Store and then it was time to get onboard the Disney Wonder for our cruise. I definitely recommend arriving to Vancouver at least one day before your Disney Cruise. Our flight arrived around 3 pm into Vancouver which gave us some time to enjoy the city before leaving to check in with Disney for our cruise the next morning. You'll also want to arrive the night before so that you aren't anxious about any flight delay that might cause you to miss the departure. The city feels far larger than it's official population (650,000 people) with innovative architecture and stunning views that blend the ocean, mountains, and city to one. In Vancouver, the spirit of adventure only grows as you lean into your anticipation for your Disney Cruise to Alaska – “the final frontier”.

Freezing the Night Away Disney Cruise Deck Party

Definitely, not enough time to check out the mill, all the totems, story plaques, or the general store. We saw several guests grab beverages, and snacks so a little food counter was also available and it would have been nice to spend more time here. Only 12 miles from the cruise port, if Mendenhall Glacier isn’t included in a tour you’ve booked, it’s easiest and cheapest to just take a taxi there. You can get up close and personal with Nugget Falls, the Mendenhall Glacier, and the trails and beaches they occupy. We did get a glimpse of the Mendenhall Glacier from our Whales excursion, but not as close as if we would’ve just gone separately.

Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, and Royal Caribbean all offer roundtrip Alaska cruises that sail from Seattle, Washington. Disney Cruise Line offers 5-night, 7-night, 8-night, and 9-night Alaskan cruises from Vancouver. As such all Disney Alaska cruises start and end in the city of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. We hand-pick everything we recommend and select items through testing and reviews. Some products are sent to us free of charge with no incentive to offer a favorable review. We offer our unbiased opinions and do not accept compensation to review products.

When we landed, it was on the 650-foot-deep Meade Glacier, but it may as well have been another planet. Confident, reassuring guides were there to explain what we were seeing—and to stop us from walking into danger—as we took in the surreal scenery before flying back to the Disney Wonder. The word “awesome” is egregiously overused, but this was awesome. There’s plenty of enthusiastic audience participation, and Goofy makes an appearance.

Essentially, the ship will sail as close as it safely can (both for the ship and wildlife) to one of a few glaciers. For example, it's common on sailings to head to the Stikine Icefields, though weather and conditions do play into exactly where you may go on a given voyage. Rochelle Mariah is a writer, designer and photographer with an MLIS in Information Science and a B.S.

A great place to grab a souvenir, this was a nice one-stop shop for us to get a feeling of Ketchikan. Disney Cruise Line does not depart from Seattle, as they depart from Vancouver, Canada. However, there are other Cruises to Alaska that depart from Seattle.

There is also an option to filter by activity type – filtering by movie for instance. This schedule that you create will then cause the app to send you push notifications. The “Add Plans” button in the app doesn't work as expected and just suggests paid activities to you. Make sure to click the “Explore” section for details on everything happening onboard.

One of the highlights on the onboard programming was the educational nature presentations. All of the adults in our group attended all three of the talks given by the naturalist that was onboard. His three presentations were on the fjords and waterways, whales and water ways, and Alaskan bears and salmon. Each of the presentations was educational and added to our excursion experience by providing context on our trip on land.

This tour is offered by Kawanti Adventures in Ketchikan, Alaska. Spanning about 3 hours this was a fairly decent deal for $149 if you wanted to get an inside look at the forests and learn about the birds and totems. However, there were definitely elements of this tour we would have changed if we had the option or had gone on our own. Included in this tour excursion are the Tongass National Rainforest Walk, The Raptor Sanctuary, and the Totem Park.
